3 Great Tips to Keep Your Vehicle in Great Condition

The last few years people have been trying to hold onto their vehicles and not replace them and buy new vehicles. To keep your vehicle in great condition we have 3 great tips that are affordable that can help you keep your vehicle looking like new.

Know how to handle a tire blow out. This is not an extremely common occurrence but if handled incorrectly can lead to a lot of damage and expensive repairs. An important factor is to remain calm which is a lot easier said than done.  Don’t erratically slam on the brakes, this will cause the vehicle to become off balanced. Release the accelerator gradually. Releasing the accelerator quickly just like slamming on the brakes will cause an imbalance and is more likely to lead in loss of control of the vehicle. Gently steer to to the side of the road out of traffic to keep your self safe from being hit.

Keep the inside of your vehicle clean. The best kept secret on how to do this is baby wipes. Baby wipes can help clean up crumbs from eating in the car and even help clean stains out of the upholstery. Spilling drinks in your cup holder is inevitable, use a baby wipe to clean up a fresh spill or a dried sticky mess. We all find our selves waiting and waiting in a drive thru line at some point, why not pull out a baby wipe and wipe down your dashboard while you wait.

Replace your windshield wipers every six months to a year. Wiper blades wear out over time and especially in exposure to harsh temperatures, high or low. When the blades become torn or cracked they are not effective at removing the rain from your window during a rainstorm. If worn down they can start making scratches on your windshield.

  • Get familiar with your car’s recommended/required maintenance and upkeep.
  • Never skip or neglect on your cars maintenance.
  • Remember, maintaining your car is a lot cheaper than buying a new one

Second to owning a home, owning a vehicle is the most costly living expenses. All of us are trying to keep our cost of living down, and especially in today’s economic world, keeping your vehicle running in good shape makes economic sense. Remember, a car is a necessity! Keeping your current car running will help you save a lot of money, as maintaining your current vehicle is definitely cheaper than buying a new one. Following the necessary  maintenance schedule will definitely help your car last longer.

Most cars would last a lot longer if people would just maintain them properly, and car care is not that difficult. It may demand some initial work and money to get the maintenance back on track, but remember, it’s a lot more expensive to replace a blown motor.

Following a maintenance schedule is always better than buying a new car! So, let’s look at a sample of a basic car maintenance schedule.

As a rule change your oil every three months, or twenty five hundred miles, whichever comes first. Balance and rotate tires along with a battery check every eight thousand miles or six months.

Now, in addition to the maintenance listed above, you will need to replace the following filters once a year, or every 15,000 miles:

Transmission, Air, Fuel, and Carbon canister filter. You should also look into getting the transmission flushed and replace the PCV and breather element. Finish up by servicing the brakes and check your battery to complete your yearly maintenance.

For every two years, or twenty five thousand miles you’ll need to add having the coolant and brake fluids flushed out and replaced, change the distributor cap, wires, and rotor, change spark plugs, and change the differential or transfer case fluid in addition to the yearly maintenance schedule.

Finally, for long term maintenance, you’ll need to add the following maintenance activities every five years, or sixty thousand miles in addition to the regular, yearly, and every two year maintenance schedule: flush and replace power steering and change timing belt.

Perform this car maintenance schedule regularly and you’re sure to keep your car running in tip-top shape.
